Rahu and Ketu
Shadow planets Rahu and Ketu are ever retrograde in their motion. Forever chasing Sun and Moon in order that they might avenge their beheading by Sun and Moon after the Churning of the Ocean. With such action, they cause the eclipse of Sun and Moon. Where eclipses happen, the nakshatra is spoiled for the next six months. As shadow planets, they move through the birth chart signs with retrograde motion and every 18 months, change signs (peyarchi). The important Rahu-Ketu axis – has significance for nations and their leadership in particular – changes signs. All is change in the body of time and space. The Shadow Planets Rahu and Ketu also elicit, by their transit and retrograde motion, changes within the human person. Rahu and Ketu affect all with their transits. During July of 2017, Rahu will move to Cancer; Ketu will move to Capricorn.
The scriptures and sastras speak of symbolisms of Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are supposed to be serpents. One is the Head; the other is the Tail. Lord Vishnu is reclining on the serpent bed. Lord Shiva is wearing serpents as ornaments on the head, and around the wrists and hands. Lord Subramanya is always with a serpent. Lord Krishna danced on Kalinga, the many-headed serpent. Thye churning of the ocean used a serpent. There are many fables in ancient Hindu scriptures where Serpents played important roles in building or destroying the destiny of an individual or a nation. The Cobra is said to obey certain laws and it is expected to conform to Truth. It will never bite ordinarily. It has a dreadful yet attractive hood. In the Puranas it is said that Cobras are endowed with gems of extreme brilliance.
Arthava Veda gives the following mantra:
May we get welfare from the planets and Moon. May we get welfare from the Sun as well as Rahu
So we take the sacred narrative given above that the actions of Rahu and Ketu are in fact loka sevanam, actions taken for our welfare on this our home planet, Bhumi Devi (Mother Earth). This action of the two shadow planets, causing eclipses, is in fact for our spiritual progress: what is dark must be brought out into the light. What is in our birth chart must be experience, we must do the seva indicated by the 6th house and serve with selfless love, nishkama karma; thus do we multiply love on the Earth as our service reaches the heart of the other, wherein resides as hrudaya vasi, Easwara in the form of God.
Rahu is currently transiting Leo where it is in Magha nakshatra. On 27 July 2017, Rahu will transit to Kartaka rasi (Cancer), Ashlesha nakshatra. For a long time, Rahu has been residing in Leo and Magha asterism. Knowledge confers humility. As Leo is the natural 5th house, the presence of Rahu (charakaraka, giver of fraud, deception, deceits, personal and professional advance by any means) may have caused some to rely on knowledge and learning where there is insufficient depth, actual learning and experience. True learning requires Jnatum, Drashtum, Praveshtum, processes of internalising and embodying the learning to proper degree. Rahu will not follow dharma; true learning and qualifications may be suspect.
Ketu is currently transiting Aquarius. On 27 July 2017, Ketu will transit to Makara rasi (Capricorn), Dhanishta nakshatra. Rule is Kuja vat Ketu, Ketu behaves like Mars. Capricorn is an earth sign, and ruled by Shani (Saturn) – therefore several influences on Ketu in Capricorn rasi. Ketu in Capricorn has exploration of deep issues in the outer world and seeking inner and outer resolution of social conflict. Ketu also takes time, slows down (Saturn dispositor) and engages in deep thought. Location of birth planets Ketu, Kuja and Shani along with Moon (presiding deity of mind) are important to determine influences and remedies needed.
